Master Zhao Qingjian is one of the defining wushu taolu athletes of the Olympic era. Born 1978 in Shandong’s Dongping County, inspired by the 1982 film Shaolin Temple, he trained at the Shanwei municipal team, the Henan Songshan Shaolin Temple performance troupe (touring the US, Asia, and Europe in the 1990s), then earned a scholarship to Wuhan Sports University. In 1999, legendary coach Wu Bin recruited him to the Beijing Wushu Team, where coaches Mei Hanchao and Yan Pinghe shaped him into a national standard-bearer.
Through the 2000s he claimed nearly every title in elite wushu: gold in Changquan at the 2003 World Wushu Championships, gold in Daoshu at the 2007 World Wushu Championships, gold in Daoshu & Gunshu combined at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Wushu Tournament — winning by a significant margin on home soil — gold at the 2009 World Games, plus All-Around National Champion at the 2000 and 2009 National Games of China. Today he teaches at the Capital Institute of Sports Education, serves as Director of the Chinese Kung Fu Inheritance Committee, and travels the world delivering seminars. As Honorary Chairman and Image Ambassador of the USWMA, he carries the international standard our athletes train toward.
